Heaviest Bat, Biggest Heart: Visiting the Roberto Clemente Museum

Roberto Clemente continues to deliver mystical impact.

It’s really the best way to describe how, 50 years after his tragic and early death, Clemente continues to make an impact on and off the baseball diamond.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer was killed in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve in 1972 during an attempt to aid Nicaraguan earthquake victims.

Clemente not only served as the first Puerto Rican superstar, but he also created and set the bar for humanitarian efforts. Major League Baseball named its annual humanitarian award after Clemente.

Curator Duane Rieder unintentionally created the Roberto Clemente Museum in Pittsburgh. It has grown to legendary status and contains a surprise in the basement that makes it a regular hangout for celebrities visiting Pittsburgh.

Food Scouts host Alison Shelton met with Rieder to discuss how Clemente’s magic is still impacting current players, families and the people of Puerto Rico.

You can support the Roberto Clemente Museum by booking a tour, event, donating or purchasing merchandise!
